Participatory Development- Success Story from Saketri

SEWA Punjab aims to develop Saketri through a participatory approach and build amongst the members a sense of responsibility towards their community. One such example of community driven development is that of the playground at Saketri.

There was a large vacant area in the slum like a dumping ground that was lying unused. SEWA Punjab conducted community meetings in which members were motivated to develop it as a children’s playground. The community members then collected money from each household to get the ground levelled. A boundary of bamboo sticks was erected by the Saketri youth club members and this space is now being used by the children as a cricket field. This has served as an example of the change that can be brought about when people are mobilized to come together and empowered to themselves take charge of their own community and lives.
